Torsion Bar: Service and Repair

    To avoid distortion of upper control arm support on torsion bar during removal, installation or when raising the vehicle, do not place jack support
against frame floor. Place support against lower control arm. The rubber mounts on the torsion bar bearing may vary at the front wall to compensate
body tolerances. During installation, ensure rubber mounts are returned to their original locations to avoid changes in front wheel caster. Mount and
tighten torsion bar bearing on front end and support of upper control arm on torsion bar only in position in which the vehicle is ready for driving.
Lubricate hex socket attaching screw on torsion bar prior to assembly.

560SL

1.

Loosen left and right lower control arm connecting linkage.

2.

Loosen left and right torsion bar bearing holding brackets, then remove torsion bar from vehicle.

3.

Reverse procedure to install.

300SEL, 350SD & SDL, 420SEL & 560SEC & SEL & 1989-91 300SE

1.

Place level control adjusting switch valve unit puller to N (normal position).

2.

Raise and support front of vehicle.

3.

Place vehicle support against lower control arms.

4.

Remove front wheels.

5.

Loosen torsion bar upper control arm support. Remove attaching screw, washer, disc washer and rubber mount from torsion bar.

6.

Remove air cleaner.

7.

Remove bulkhead center piece and left bulkhead side member.

8.

Remove master cylinder and brake booster.

9.

Remove windshield wiper motor and cover.

10.

Disconnect level control connecting rod from lever. Do not pull ball pin from ball socket.

11.

Remove level control bracket from front wall and pull forward together with lines attached. Do not disconnect pressure lines. Ensure level
control lever at this time is not placed in the F (filling) detent. Secure lever from moving into this position.

12.

Remove electronic RPM control unit.

13.

Remove ABS (anti-lock brake system) control unit and bracket.

14.

Remove battery and battery tray.

15.

Drain enough coolant to allow automatic climate control regulating valve to be removed without coolant leakage.

16.

Disconnect and cap coolant hoses from firewall.

17.

Remove right bulkhead side member.

18.

Discharge refrigerant from A/C system.

19.

Disconnect and cap expansion valve lines.

20.

Remove left and right brake line bracket from front wall.

21.

Remove fuse panel bracket.

22.

Remove lower right portion of bulkhead.

23.

Remove left and right torsion bar bearing clip attaching nuts.

24.

Remove left and right front end covers.

25.

Using a suitable tool, push torsion bar out of control arm eye.

26.

Remove torsion bar first from the right side, then after slightly turning torsion bar upward, disconnect torsion bar from the left side.

27.

Reverse procedure to install. During installation of torsion bar, install torsion bar with bend portions of torsion bar arms pointing downward. Place
level control adjusting switch valve puller into N (normal level) position. If vehicle level is too low, start and operate engine until normal vehicle
level (height) is obtained.

190D & E, 300CE, D, E & TE

1.

Remove lower engine compartment lining, if so equipped.

2.

Loosen and remove left and right torsion bar bearing bracket from control arm.

3.

Loosen bearings from spring leaf rockers and remove torsion bar. The rubber torsion bar mounts do not have a slot. For this reason use
rubber lubricant No. A0009890160 or equivalent for removal and installation.

4.

Reverse procedure to install.
