DISASSEMBLY

    Do not separate the two caliper halves. The attaching bolts securing the two halves are tightened to a definite torque by the manufacturer.
When replacing a piston seal on a BENDIX caliper, ensure the pressed on ring is not forced off when the dust cap is removed.

1.

Remove caliper from disc rotor.

2.

Remove brake pads.

3.

Using a suitable screwdriver, remove duct cap from caliper housing.

4.

Using suitable pliers, hold one piston in the caliper. Using compressed air, force out the other caliper piston. Do not exceed 7 psi (.5 bar) to
remove piston from caliper. If pistons are frozen in their bores, replace caliper assembly.

5.

Remove piston seal from cylinder bore, Figs. 10 through 12.

INSPECTION

1.

On BENDIX type calipers, remove heat shield from piston.

2.

on all models, remove deposits on piston with a soft brass wire brush or a rough cleaning cloth. Do not use polishing cloth or emery cloth, since
this will damage the chrome-plated surface. Replace piston if surface is damaged.

3.

Check caliper cylinder bores for wear. Replace caliper assembly if bores are scored or rusted. Remove small, minor rust spots in bore with
polishing cloth. Remove heavier rust spots in front of piston seal groove with fine emery paper (380 to 500 grain).

ASSEMBLY

1.

Coat new piston seal slightly with clean ATE brake cylinder paste and insert into caliper cylinder bore groove. On BENDIX type calipers,
ensure pressed on ring is firmly and completely seated.

2.

Insert piston into caliper bore.

3.

Using suitable pliers, move piston into correct position. Insert piston with elevation (marked in black) on piston facing upward.

4.

On Teves type caliper, mount dust cap onto piston and position against caliper collar.

5.

Using suitable tools, press dust cap onto caliper collar.

6.

On BENDIX type caliper, press heat shield onto piston according to piston position. The elevation on piston should project approximately
.0039 inch (.1 mm) beyond heat shield.

7.

Install dust cap onto piston. Mount dust cap onto caliper collar, then push piston completely backward until dust cap is seated on piston collar.

8.

On Girling type calipers, mount dust cap onto piston. Push dust cap over caliper web and attach with clamping ring.

9.

On all models, install brake pads into caliper.

10.

Install caliper.
