Camshaft - Removal & Installation Procedure

CAMSHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
ENGINES 601, 602 AND 603

Note:

Changed sequence on engines 602 and 603.

To avoid breaking the camshaft during removal/installation, the camshaft
bearing bolts must be loosened/tightened gradually and alternately.

The following procedure MUST be strictly adhered to.

Procedure

Removal

1.

Remove valve cover.

2.

Set engine to ignition TDC of first cylinder.

3.

Remove chain tensioner (job no. 05-310).

4.

Place alignment mark on camshaft sprocket and timing chain.

5.

Remove sprocket; secure sprocket and chain with a piece of wire to front of cylinder head.

Engine 601

6.

Remove both bolts from bearings (solid arrows, Figure 1).

7.

Gradually, one at a time, loosen both bolts alternately from bearing no. 2 and 4 until the counterpressure is relieved (outlined arrows, Figure 1).
