Engine - Hydraulic Valve Tappet Inspection

Unnecessary Replace Of Hydraulic Valve Tappets 
Engines 601, 602, 603.96

Ticking noise from hydraulic valve tappets for a short time after frequent starting and stopping of the engine, or after the engine is turned off for an
exended period (e.g. overnight) is normal and not a justified cause for replacement of the valve tappets.

Inspections of valve tappets returned under warranty have shown that many of the valve tappets were replaced unnecessarily. Warranty claims for the
replacement of complete sets of valve tappets with vent hole will be rejected in the future.

A proper evaluation of noisy valve tappets can only be made by performing the following test procedure.

Note:

In case of complaints, the replacement of the complete set of valve tappets is justified only if valve tappets without the vent hole (see S.I. 05/65,
Apr. 1988) are installed. If valve tappets with vent hole are installed, only those valve tappets which fail the following test procedure should be
replaced.

Test Procedure

1.

Run engine to operating temperature (80°C/176°F engine oil temperature).

2.

Check engine oil level. Assure that engine is not overfilled.

3.

Remove valve cover.

4.

Check valve tappets. Check first the cylinder which is already at TDC (cam lobes of intake and exhaust cam are pointing upwards).

With a pin, apply light pressure on top of the valve tappet (Figure 1) while measuring the clearance between cam base circle and valve tappet with a
feeler gauge. Turn engine to bring the next cylinder (in sequence of firing order) to TDC and perform procedure from step 4 with all cylinders.

CAUTION!

Unnecessary turning of the engine will promote leak-down of the valve tappets.

A valve tappet should only be replaced if the clearance between valve tappet and camshaft exceeds 0.4 mm (0.016").
