Control Arm: Service and Repair
Front
Front Upper Control Arm
300SEL, 350SD & SDL, 420SEL, & 89-91 300SE
Torque upper control arm bearings, torsion bar upper control arm support and torsion bar bearings only with vehicle wheels contacting floor.
1.
Raise and support front of vehicle. Place vehicle supports against lower control arm.
2.
Remove front wheel(s).
3.
Loosen guide joint attaching nut.
4.
Using a suitable tool, remove guide joint from steering knuckle.
5.
Secure steering knuckle from tilting using a suitable hook placed on the control arm.
6.
Remove upper control arm support.
7.
Loosen upper control arm bearing, then remove upper control arm from vehicle.
8.
Reverse procedure to install.
Front Lower Control Arm
123, 124 & 126 SERIES
1.
Remove front shock absorber.
2.
Raise and support vehicle.
3.
Remove front wheel(s).
4.
Remove front spring.
5.
Remove steering knuckle arm track rod.
6.
Mark positions of eccentric bolt for frame crossmember on lower control arm bearing.
7.
Remove brake support from frame floor.
8.
Remove eccentric bolt from lower control arm bearing.
9.
Force supporting joint from lower control arm.
10.
Remove lower control arm and brake support.
11.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following torque values:
a. Torque supporting joint nut to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
b. Torque lower control arm bearing eccentric bolt to 132 ft. lbs. (180 Nm).
c. Torque track rod ball joint nut to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
d. Torque lower shock absorber attaching nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
e. On 123 series, torque brake support to lower control arm attaching bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
f.
On 126 series, torque brake support to lower control arm M10 attaching bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm), M12 bolts to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
