Hardtop - Ventilation Panel Corrosion

In case of customer complaints regarding hardtop corrosion in the area of the ventilation panel (arrows), an improved replacement panel is now available
(Figure 1). As of July 1987 production the ventilation panel is zinc coated on both sides (as of October 1984 production the panel was zinc coated on the
top side only)

In cases of corrosion in this area on any vehicle produced as of July 1987, please contact your local zone office before any repair work is performed.

procedure

1.

Remove hardtop headliner, glass, rear moldings and seal.

2.

Drill out spot welds on old panel. Remove panel and grind spot welds flat.

3.

Drill corresponding number of 7 mm holes into new panel using old panel as template. Apply zinc dust paint to bare metal edges.

4.

Plug weld new panel to hardtop.

NOTE:

Model Year 1982 and later models have the vent openings taped shut from the inside due to revised ventilation outlets in the quarter panels. If the
tape has been moved or damaged, retape the openings.

5.

Prime with M-B Primer Filler mixed with M-B Hardener.

6.

Seal overlaps and seams with M-B Body Seam Sealer.

7.

Paint as required.

8.

Apply M-B Anti-Corrosion Wax into hollow spaces through vent openings.
