Camshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation

Component Identification

The Hall sensor for the intake camshaft is located at the upper left on the cylinder head.
The Hall sensor on the exhaust camshaft is located at the right front on the cylinder head.

Task

The ME control unit (N3/10) uses signal from the camshaft Hall sensor to detect the position of the camshafts.
The position of the intake camshaft is, for example, required for recognizing the ignition TDC position of cylinder 1 and for synchronizing the ignition
and injection sequence.

If the signal from the crankshaft position sensor (L5) is missing then the signal from the Hall sensor on the intake camshaft or Hall sensor on the exhaust
camshaft is used as substitute for the limp-home.

Component Identification

Detection of the camshaft position takes place via a Hall sensor which detects the position of the segment on the camshaft (from a 180° camshaft
revolution).
Here the signal from the Hall sensor is at about 12 V (high) if the segment does not stand over the Hall sensor.
If the segment moves past the Hall sensor, the signal from the Hall sensor will spring to 0 V (low).

The Hall sensors can already detect the camshaft positions at engine OFF which allows the rapid start function of the engine. This improves the exhaust
emission values at engine start through the fact that each cylinder is assigned the optimal injection quantity immediately upon starting.
