Auxiliary Cabin Heater: Description and Operation

Function

Stationary Heater (STH), Function

In cold seasons before commencing a journey, the stationary heater ensures:

-

the passenger compartment is preheated,

-

the windows are free of ice and condensation,

-

the engine is preheated.

The use of a stationary heater helps to reduce:

-

the risk of an accident by providing excellent vision before starting out on a trip,

-

the mechanical wear to the automotive engine associated with a cold start,

-

fuel consumption and at the same time it also helps to preserve environmental resources by cutting down the pollutants in exhaust emissions when
starting up a previously heated engine.

The stationary heater also includes the function of stationary ventilation. In cases of high ambient temperatures or low ambient temperatures and a high
passenger-compartment temperature contingent on massive insulation, the switch-on signal will only activate the passenger-compartment ventilation via
the HEAT or AAC pushbutton control module.

The heater device is started up the instant when during a heating period the passenger-compartment temperature drops below the value preset on the
HEAT or AAC pushbutton control module because of the stationary ventilation. Depending upon the response to temperature changes it may happen that
during a heating period there is a frequent switching to and fro between stationary ventilation and heating.

The central component of the stationary heater is the compact water heater "Thermo Top C".

In spite of its compact dimensions the heater combines all the components necessary for generation of heat and heat exchange into a single unit.

The heater is categorized into four function groups:

-

the combustion air blower unit

-

the burner housing

-

the control module/heat exchanger unit and

-

coolant circulation pump

The heater device is connected directly to the heater and coolant circuits for the vehicle engine and makes use of them together with its own circulation
pump to transfer heat.
