Knocking or Rumbling Noise From the Front Axle Area on Rough Roads

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of a knocking or rumbling noise from the front axle area when driving on rough roads, check
the ball joints for the front torsion bar links for excessive wear. The excessive wear can be caused by moisture entering through the sealing bellows. In
this case, there will be noticeable play in the ball joint. To resolve, install new torsion bar links. As of October 2002 production, the rod ends have been
redesigned (new part number) (Figure 1 and 2). If the ball joints for the front torsion bar links are OK, refer to WIS document no. AR32.00-P-2000A for
additional diagnostic assistance. Repair procedure, refer to WIS document no. AR32.20-P-0300P.

Note:

The revised torsion bar link ends have undergone extensive testing in order to ensure an adequate service life. For this reason, the torsion bar link
ends should not be immediately regarded as the cause of noise for vehicles produced as of October 2002.
