Complaint:

Grinding noise from area of front axle.

Cause:

Corrosion spreading under wheel hub sealing ring. Dirt and water are washed in front of the sealing ring of the wheel hub via the rpm sensor bore in the
steering knuckle or through corresponding gaps between the anchor plate and steering knuckle. Corrosion forms on the contact surface of the sealing ring
and spreads under the sealing lips. As a result, moisture can penetrate the wheel bearing and cause corrosion.

Remedy:

In order to avoid follow-up repairs, the procedure described below must be strictly adhered to:

1.) Detach wheel hub, bearing and brake cover plate.

2.) Assess contact surface of sealing ring on steering knuckle and replace steering knuckle if necessary.

See Figures (A, B, C) in attachment.

Figure A: Surface has a metallic sheen and only slight damage or corrosion: Replacement of steering knuckle not necessary.

Figures B and C: Sealing surface on steering knuckle with wheel hub sealing ring exhibits score marks or corrosion: Steering knuckle must be replaced.

NOTE:

The surface can only be accurately assessed after removing the brake cover plate.

3.) Install new version of version with optimized sponge rubber (see picture in attachment).

NOTE:

Check brake cover plate to establish whether it is variant "1" (new version; see attachment).

4.) Install sponge rubber ring as an additional seal for the rpm sensor.

To do this, remove rpm sensor and push on sponge rubber ring. The white side of the sponge rubber ring must face towards the cable (see picture at
bottom left in attachment).

5.) Install bearing and hub.

6.) Reassemble the vehicle.

7.) If the steering knuckle was replaced, perform wheel alignment check.
