the engine speed from the pulses of the sensor and outputs a corresponding message over the engine compartment CAN.

The speed sensors (L6/1, L6/2, L6/3, L6/4) are read in by the traction systems control module (N47). The traction systems control module (N47)
calculates the wheel speeds from the pulses of the sensors and outputs the corresponding messages over the engine compartment CAN. The
instrument cluster (A1) receives these messages and calculates from them the vehicle speed and the distance driven.

Engine Oil Monitor Function

General

The oil level is constantly monitored by the oil sensor (oil level, temperature and quality, B40), and the corresponding data are passed on to the
processor by ASSYST. Quantities of oil added are recognized automatically and result in a bonus which increases the service interval accordingly. A
message on the multifunction display (Ap13) in the instrument cluster (A1) together with the oil can symbol indicates if the oil level is too high or too
low.

The oil warnings are displayed:

Automatically, at the earliest 60 s after starting the engine when the oil temperature is greater than 60 °C:
-

If oil level is too high: The oil can symbol and the message "REDUCE ENGINE OIL LEVEL!" appear on the display. A short warning tone
also sounds.

When the oil level is critically low or the oil condition is poor (too much water in oil): 
The oil can symbol and the message "ENGINE OIL; VISIT WORKSHOP!" appear on the display. A short warning tone also sounds.

At minimum oil level: The oil can symbol and the message "CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL!" appear. A short warning tone also sounds.

Automatically 13 s after switching the ignition ON:
-

When the oil level has decreased to a level which could damage the engine: The oil can symbol and the message "ENGINE OIL LEVEL
STOP; ENGINE OFF!" appear in red. A warning tone also sounds.

Display of oil quantity

-

Turn ignition switch to position "2".

-

Continue pressing system selection pushbutton (S110s3) until the basic image (odometer and trip counter reading) appear in the multifunction
display (A1p13). (Only necessary if the basic image is not yet displayed.)

Continue operating scroll forward/back pushbutton (S11Os1) until the readout "ENGINE OIL LEVEL CAR MUST BE LEVEL" appears in the
multifunction display (A1p13).

-

If the car is parked on a level surface1 interrupt measurement by pressing button again within 3 s.

If the measurement is not terminated, the message "ENGINE OIL LEVEL MEASUREMENT IN PROGRESS" appears for approx. 3 s.

The following messages can then appear:
-

"ENGINE OIL LEVEL OKAY"

-

"ENGINE OIL LEVEL, REDUCE OIL LEVEL"

-

"ENGINE OIL LEVEL, ADD 1.0 L"

-

"ENGINE OIL LEVEL, ADD 1.5 L"

-

"ENGINE OIL LEVEL, ADD 2.0 L"

The quantity of oil to be added is given in liters (L) or quarts (Q).

The message "MEASUREMENT NOT POSSIBLE NOW!" appears when the waiting time has not been observed.

NOTE:  The quantity of oil to be added no longer changes while it is displayed. A change in the oil level can therefore not be recognized immediately by
the display. The new oil level is indicated only under the conditions described below.

Waiting time

Measurement of the oil level is possible only after switching the engine OFF and expiration of a waiting time.
If the driver attempts to call up the oil level with the engine ON, the message "ENGINE OIL CHECK NOT POSSIBLE WITH ENGINE RUNNING".

The waiting time after switching off the engine depends on the engine oil temperature.
It is

-

Up to 20 °C

30 minutes

-

Above 60 °C

1 minute

-

At other temperatures the corresponding intermediate values apply for the waiting time.

Display on measuring system error

If a fault exists in the measuring system e.g. fault in oil sensor (oil level, temperature and quality, B4O) the oil can symbol and the readout "ENGINE
OIL LEVEL VISIT WORKSHOP" appear at the earliest 30 s after the fault has occurred.
