The COMAND system mainly consists of the following 3 control units:

COMAND controller unit (A40/3)
Controls the functions of the COMAND system including integrated hard disk, PCMCIA drive and DVD changer
^
Front central operating unit (A40/9) Is the main operating unit of the COMAND system
^
COMAND display (A40/8)
Is the display unit of the COMAND system
The control units communicate via different data bus systems and discrete lines with each other.
The COMAND system contains the following functions:

Audio functions
Radio (supports Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS)), CD, audio DVD, music register
^
Communication functions
Telephone, e-mail, Bluetooth, Internet
^
Navigation functions
Destination-oriented navigation, voice output, dynamic route guidance with VICS

Video functions
Video DVD, TV, backup camera
^
Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
^
Electronic Toll Collection System (ETC)
Operation
The functions of the COMAND controller unit can be used as follows:

Via the buttons and controls of the front central operating unit and the COMAND display
^
Via the buttons of the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) and the instrument cluster (A1)
