Function

The front passenger seat occupied and automatic child seat recognition are determined by means of the weight applied to the front passenger seat. The
weight is determined using a pressure measurement from the seat occupied recognition pressure sensor (B48/4) in a seat mat filled with silicone.

The force that is introduced via the seat belt is measured by the belt tension sensor (B48/3) so that weight classification corrections can be made if
necessary. These two measurements are used by the Weight Sensing System (WSS) control unit (N110) to calculate a weight classification for the weight
on the seat, which is then transmitted to the central gateway control unit (N93) via the interior CAN and then relayed to the restraint systems control unit
(N2/7) via the chassis CAN.

The following conditions are defined depending on the weight classification:

Seat unoccupied:
the front passenger airbag unit, front passenger sidebag unit and front passenger belt buckle emergency tensioning retractor unit are disabled

Seat occupied:

Light weight (e.g. child seat) and belt applied: front passenger airbag unit switched off

Person detected: Front passenger airbag unit enabled (ignition of first or both stages)

The signal is also transmitted to the instrument cluster (A1) via the interior CAN, which displays a message on the multifunction display (A1p13).

Automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp (S6/2e1)

If the front passenger seat is found to be occupied, the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp in the cockpit switch group (S6/2) is
switched off.

If the front passenger seat is found to be unoccupied, the airbag OFF indicator lamp is switched on.

If a light weight is detected and the latch plate has also been inserted, the airbag OFF indicator lamp is switched on as well as the multifunction display in
the instrument cluster.

The signal for switching the airbag Off indicator lamp on or off is relayed to the central gateway control unit via the chassis CAN by the restraint systems
control unit, from where it is relayed to the instrument cluster via the central CAN.

Function

The seat occupied recognition determines the occupancy status of the front passenger seat via the foil pressure sensors that are integrated in the front
passenger seat occupied recognition system (B41/1) and relays this information to the restraint systems control unit (N2/7).

In vehicles up to 31.5.07 the occupancy status is evaluated by the restraint systems control unit in order to decide whether to deploy the relevant restraint
equipment.
