In vehicles as of 1.6.07 the information about the front passenger seat occupancy status is only used for the seat belt reminder warning.

Optical status indication

The automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp (S6/2e1) in the cockpit switch group (S6/2) is always switched on for a short time with
circuit 15 ON (lamp check). Actuation is carried out via the upper control panel LIN by the upper control panel control unit (N72/1)

If a front passenger seat is detected as being unoccupied, the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp is switched off.

In vehicles as of 1.6.07 the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp is only actuated with circuit 15 On for 4 seconds for function
testing. It has no other functionality.

Function

The front passenger seat occupancy and the automatic child seat recognition are recorded by the front passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition
sensor (B48) and relayed to the restraint systems control unit (N2/7).

The automatic child seat recognition is only guaranteed to work with a child seat that has been approved and coded b DaimlerChrysler. This child seat
must be equipped with 2 transponders (resonators), which are located in its base on the left and right.

The following situations are defined:

Seat unoccupied (seat belt not applied):
the front passenger airbag unit, front passenger sidebag unit and front passenger belt buckle emergency tensioning retractor unit are disabled

Seat unoccupied (seat belt applied):
the front passenger airbag unit is disabled

Seat occupied (light or heavy person):
front passenger airbag unit enabled (ignition of first stage or both stages)

Child seat detected:
Front passenger airbag unit is disabled

Automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp (S6/2e1)

The signal for switching the airbag OFF indicator lamp on when a child seat is detected is transmitted to the central gateway control unit (N93) by the
restraint systems control unit via the chassis CAN and then to the upper control panel control unit (N72/1) via the interior CAN. This then relays the
signal to the cockpit switch group (S6/2) via the upper control panel LIN.

Error messages

If the seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor is defective or communication with the restraint systems control unit is interrupted (e.g. plug not
connected), the airbag OFF indicator lamp is also switched on. A fault is also stored in the restraint systems control unit and an appropriate message is
shown on the instrument cluster (A1).

If the child seat is defective or wrongly positioned (only one resonator detected), the airbag indicator and warning lamp (A1e15) in the instrument cluster
and the airbag OFF indicator lamp are switched on.
