Control of COMAND system on multifunction steering wheel
The systems controlled by the COMAND feature can be operated and information displayed on the systems with the aid of the multifunction display
(A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1) and the switches on the multifunction steering wheel. These systems are:
-
Audio: Radio, CD changer,...
-
Navigation System
-
Telephone
All data exchanged between the instrument cluster (A1) and the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) is accomplished via the CAN
(A1-A40/3) bus.
All buttons actuated on the multifunction steering wheel are read in directly as voltage coded signal by the instrument cluster (A1). The instrument
cluster (A1) links these signals with the system momentarily displayed on the multifunction display (audio, navigation, telephone). This interpretation is
necessary because the function of the buttons depends on the present contents of the multifunction display (A1p13). The interpreted data is then relayed
from the instrument cluster (A1) to the CAN bus and received by the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3). Changing the system on
the multifunction display does not affect the representation on the display of the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3), however, it
does vice versa.
NOTE: The CAN bus (A1-A40/3) is independent of the CAN passenger compartment bus.
NOTE: The instrument cluster (A1) receives the current time from the COMAND module because it is received automatically by GPS and therefore
does not need to be reset.
