The graphic signals for map display are generated by the navigation processor (A40/3n2). Three types of display are possible:

-

Symbolic display (route guidance symbols)

-

Map display

-

Mixture of map display and symbolic representation

The map scale can be changed in increments (100 m/cm to 500 km/cm). Moreover, it is possible to select whether the map is to be aligned in the
direction the vehicle is driving (head-up) or to the north (north-up).

The actual guidance is supported significantly by the voice output.

Guidance In Non-Digitized MAP Area

When driving outside of the digitized map area (e.g. company grounds, enclosed parking facilities, rural roads,...), however, still within the CD-ROM
map boundaries, the navigation processor (A40/3n2) switches over to "Guidance in non-digitized map area". The message

"OFF ROAD"

appears on the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3).

If the vehicle is outside of the CD-ROM map boundaries (outside of country) the display also indicates the message:

"NO MAP"

In both cases only basic location finding (dead reckoning) with correction using the GPS data is accomplished (no map matching).
The limited guidance is accomplished only by indicating:

The straight line distance to the destination and

-

The direction to the destination (as arrow).

After re-entering the digitized map area, the system automatically continues with "Guidance in digitized map area". The possible streets in which the
vehicle could be are determined with the aid of GPS location finding. This can result in temporary delays in the guidance function.

NOTE:  When the message "NO MAP" appears, complete guidance can be continued after inserting a corresponding CD-ROM for the country in
question.
