Switch off characteristics

The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) is switched off when the transmitter key (A8/1) (circuit 15C OFF) is removed. Then the 
navigation system run-on time of t = 30 min starts (standby mode).

During this period all the important locating parameters are stored. Furthermore, the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3n1) is in
principle always in standby mode, when CAN B is active.

Switch off characteristics at undervoltage

The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) constantly monitors the battery voltage. Depending on the voltage value the system will act
as follows:
If the battery voltage drops below 11.5 volts (battery warning area) a message appears in the display which requests the engine to be started If the engine
is not started, a further warning follows after 3 minutes indicating that 10 seconds remain for starting the engine before the system shuts off. In this case
switching on the engine prevents the system from being automatically shut down. However, if the system has shut off and the voltage increases to more
than 11.5 V again, the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) does not automatically switch itself on again.

If a system has been shut down it can still be switched back on again manually. The warning procedure ensues each time until the fault is eliminated.

Battery voltage below 9.5 V (undervoltage)

The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) is automatically put into a defined standby condition in which only the battery voltage is
monitored. In addition to this the current operating status is stored. The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) cannot be operated or
accessed using STAR DIAGNOSIS when it is in this condition. Communication with external components does not take place.

Exceptions to switch-off behavior (run-on mode) if destination not reached (model 203 as of 1.7.02):

The navigation system remains active up to t = 30 min. (e.g. when refueling, having a snack). The navigation continues once the vehicle is
restarted.

After t = 30 min up to max. 2 h the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) remains in "Sleep mode". The route is calculated again
after the vehicle is restarted and the navigation continued

After the expiry of t = 2 h, a request is displayed when the vehicle is restarted asking if the route is to be calculated again.
"YES" = Route to be calculated again
"NO" = Navigation to be ended

On/Off characteristics

Position "0" (circuit 15C ON)
In order to ensure a quicker switch-on process, only the bus systems are activated for 3 minutes by inserting the transmitter key (A8/1) into the EIS
control unit (N73), position "0" (circuit 15C ON). This process is triggered by the radio (A2) by sending a signal via the wake-up line. A wake-up signal
can also be triggered by the telephone, for example.
If the radio (A2) is switched on with the ON/OFF button, it is switched off automatically after 1 hour.

Position"1" (circuit 15R ON)
The unit is switched on by turning the transmitter key (A8/1) to position "1" (circuit 15R ON), provided that it was switched on prior to the last time the
transmitter key (A8/1) was removed.

It remains in operation until the transmitter key (A8/1) is removed again.
The function options are limited to:

Operating the radio (A2)

Multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1)

Operation via multifunction steering wheel

Position "2" (circuit 15 ON)
All the functions in the vehicle are operational by turning the transmitter key (A8/1) further to position "2" (circuit 15 ON). The system that was active
before the key was last removed is switched on and the corresponding main menu is displayed.
