Drive/Propeller Shaft: Removal and Replacement

Remove/install Propeller Shaft
CAUTION: See notes on self-locking nuts and bolts
DANGER:

Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform
-
Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points
specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

Raise vehicle.

Remove exhaust system (105) at flange connection.

Remove exhaust shielding plate (105c)
NOTE: Installation: Replace sheet metal nuts if necessary.

Remove bottom part of noise encapsulation

Remove rear engine crossmember and rear engine mount
6.1 Unscrew crossmember (40) at floor shift.
6.2 Detach front reinforcement brace below propeller shaft
NOTE: Model 203 with 4MATIC: it is not necessary to detach the exhaust shielding plate for the rear engine mount from the reinforcement
brace.

Slacken bolts of propeller shaft intermediate bearing (7)

Disconnect front propeller shaft (1) at transmission
NOTE:

The flexible coupling remains on the propeller shaft.

Installation: mount front propeller shaft at transmission

Detach rear propeller shaft (2) from rear axle center assembly
NOTE:
-
The flexible coupling remains on the propeller shaft.

Installation: mount rear propeller shaft at rear axle center assembly

Loosen fitted sleeves in flexible coupling
