The COMAND, operating, display and controller unit controls the following systems centrally:

Audio system (radio tuner, audio CDs (MP3-compatible))

CD changer, with code (819) 6-disk CD changer

Telephone system

^

Voice control system (VCS [SBS])

External devices (e.g. an MP3 player) via AUX jack

Design

The following are integrated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit:

Graphic-capable liquid crystal color display (LCD)

^

CD disk drive

^

Operating unit for controlling the audio, navigation and telematics functions

^

Central computer

^

Interface to the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)

Function

The control buttons and switches on the function keypad on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit are read in via the microcontroller I/O
ports and transferred to the central computer. Depending on the system function, button actuations are processed further in the central computer or sent
to the other system components via MOST and the Controller Area Network bus Class B (interior) (CAN-B) in the form of a data telegram.

Audio signal output

The audio signals from the various sources (CD, voice output for destination-oriented navigation, etc.) are processed by the audio gateway control unit
(N93/1) and amplified by a sound amplifier built into the audio gateway control unit prior to being output via the vehicle speakers.

Info menu

In the "Navigation" menu, route information can be requested using the "INFO" soft button. The "Back" softkey takes you back to the screen, from
which the Info menu was called up.

Diagnosis and fault management

While the COMAND operating, display and controller unit is active, the COMAND system stores all faults which have occurred in the MOST
components in the non-volatile memory. Each MOST component has its own fault memory. Any faults which may have occurred are transmitted to the
audio gateway control unit via MOST when requested by STAR DIAGNOSIS. The audio gateway control unit is the diagnostic gateway for all MOST
components; it forwards the diagnostic data to the central gateway control unit (N93) via CAN-B.

The diagnostic data can be read out at the central gateway control unit by means of STAR DIAGNOSIS using the data link connector (X11/4). It is not
possible to output the faults using the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

Additional display in the LCD color display

If the conditions for calculating the position are not met (first position calculation with at least 4 satellites), only the number of satellites received appears
in the LCD color display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

CD and CD drive

Conventional audio CDs and audio CDs in MP3 format can be played using the integrated CD drive.
