Function

The seat occupied recognition transmits the information whether or not the front passenger seat is occupied via the front passenger seat occupied and
child seat recognition sensor (B48). Additionally, a mounted child seat and its direction of installation is recognized. The seat occupation status is
evaluated by the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) to help decide whether the corresponding retention systems should be triggered.

The functionality of the automatic child seat recognition is only given where a DaimlerChrysler approved and control unit coded child seat is used. This
child seat must be equipped with 2 transponders (resonators), which are located at the bottom on the left and right side. Transmission antennas in the
sensor mat transmit a signal, which is modified by the child seat corresponding to its direction of installation. The receiving antennas in the sensor mat
receive the signal. An electronic analysis system evaluates these signals and forwards the seat occupation status or the automatic child seat recognition
status to the restraint systems control unit.

Visual status indication

The automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp (N72/1e1) in the upper control panel control unit (N72/1) is always switched on for a
short period of time in the event of circuit 15 on (lamp check). If the system recognizes that the front passenger seat is not occupied, the airbag Off
indicator lamp is switched off. If a child seat is mounted or mounted incorrectly, the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp comes
on.

If the front passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor is malfunctioning or defective, the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF
indicator lamp comes on and the particular fault is stored in the restraint systems control unit. A corresponding error message in shown in the instrument
cluster (A1).
