Seat Belt Retractor: Description and Operation

Function Description of Seat Belt Automatic Wear Comfort Feature:

The emergency tensioning retractors in the ELEGANCE and AVANTGARDE versions are equipped with an additional automatic wear comfort feature.
This automatic wear comfort feature reduces the extension and return forces of the automatic retractor when the seat belt is buckled, increasing the
comfort for passengers when the belt is worn.

The primary components of the automatic wear comfort feature include:

Heavy-duty retractor spring (1)

Weak comfort spring (2)

Spring housing with teeth on outside

Left and right front seat belt comfort feature adjustment solenoids (K 18/4 and K 18/5)

Left and right front seat belt buckle/belt comfort feature switches (S68/9 and S68/10)

Function Description:

In the normal state the weak comfort spring (2) is pulled to the blocked position by the superimposed force and is therefore inoperational. The
heavy-duty retractor spring (1) acts on the shaft of the belt retractor so that only the retraction function is effective. The spring housing turns with the
shaft of the seat belt retractor in the direction of retraction.

When the seat belt is buckled the seat belt comfort feature adjustment solenoid (K18/4 or K18/5) is actuated by the seat belt buckle/belt comfort
feature switch (S68/9 or S68/10). The solenoid locks up the spring housing with a pawl. The pawi engages in the teeth on the outside of the spring
housing so that the housing cannot turn in the retraction direction and thereby disconnects the heavy-duty retractor spring.

The weak comfort spring, which was previously blocked, now acts on the shaft of the seat belt retractor providing greater comfort.

In the comfort position the extension and retraction forces for the automatic belt retractor are reduced due to the effect of the weak spring depending
on how far the belt is pulled out.
