Tow Sensor: Description and Operation

The anti-towing sensor (TS) is a supplement to the existing functions of the anti-theft alarm system (ATA).

Purpose

The anti-towing sensor recognizes a change in the position of the vehicle or when the entire vehicle is towed away and signals this to the ATA control
module. Moreover, wheel theft is also recognized by the change in the position of the vehicle and signaled to the ATA control module.

Function

The TS is switched on and off by the pneumatic system equipment PSE (A37). After switching on a self-test is performed. If a fault is recognized during
this test, the TS remains out of function until it is switched off.
An electrolytic fluid is present in the tilt sensor (B33). The sensor recognizes the change in the tilt of the vehicle by means of electrodes in this fluid.
When the vehicle is parked the present vehicle position is stored using the fluid level and electrode position.
If the tilt of the vehicle is then changed in the longitudinal and by lateral direction by a certain amount with the ATA activated, the tilt sensor (B33)
sends a signal to the pneumatic system equipment (A37).

NOTE:  The ATA control module is integrated into the pneumatic system equipment PSE (A37).

This signal trips the ATA optical and acoustic alarm.

NOTE:  Heavy continuous shaking of the vehicle can lead to tripping the alarm.

Switching off anti-towing sensor

In order to prevent a false alarm when the vehicle is transported or loaded the anti-towing sensor can be switched off with the infrared (IR)/anti-towing
sensor/anti-theft alarm system (ATA) status indicator switch (S85/2).
For this purpose remove the key from the steering lock and press switch S85/2 up. The status indicator in switch S85/2 comes on for approx. 2s as an
acknowledgment signal. After this indicator lamp goes out the vehicle can be locked centrally from outside.
The TS remains switched off until the vehicle is locked again centrally from the outside.
