Front Steering Knuckle: Removal and Replacement
NOTE: Numbers in parentheses ( ) indicate a component or tool in the associated illustration.
REMOVAL
NOTE: To remove the steering knuckle the shock absorber must be installed
1. Remove front wheel
2. Remove brake disc, refer to Brakes and Traction Control
3. Remove front wheel hub, refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.
4. Remove brake splash shield (35)
5. Remove Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) (L6/1 ) and brake pad wear indicator
6. Using puller (050) tool No. 202 589 02 33 00 and thrust piece (051a) tool No. 140 589 00 63 00, or equivalents, remove track rod (10) from
steering knuckle (5)

Check rubber boot and ball joint for wear and damage.
7. Using puller (050) and thrust piece (051a), remove supporting joint (7) from steering knuckle (5)

Check rubber boot and ball joint for wear and damage.
8. Using puller (043) tool No. 124 589 03 33 00 and thrust piece (043a) tool No. 210 589 04 63 00, or equivalents, remove steering knuckle (5) from
upper wishbone (6)

Check rubber boot and ball joint for wear and damage.
9. Using puller (043) tool No. 124 589 03 33 00 and thrust piece (043a) tool No. 210 589 04 63 00, or equivalents.
INSTALLATION

Install in reverse order, noting the following:

Replace self-locking nuts and bolts
-
Perform chassis alignment check

Tighten the following components as noted:
-
Self-locking nut of upper wishbones on steering knuckles: 45 Nm
-
Self-locking nut, supporting joint on steering knuckle: 105 Nm
-
Brake pipes, brake hoses: 18 Nm
-
Bolt, brake splash shield on steering knuckle: 22 Nm
-
Self-locking bolt, front axle VSS sensor on steering knuckle: 22 Nm
-
Self-locking nut of track rod on steering: 70 Nm
