E 320 4MATIC Wagon (210.282) V6-3.2L (112.941) (1998)
If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of squeaking noises while slowly turning the steering wheel when engine is running at
operating temperatures, locate the source of the noise. Refer to DTB P-B-46.20/12 (or latest version). If the noise is coming from the sealing boot
between the firewall and steering shaft, this may be due to unfavorable friction at the steering shaft boot. To remedy, for vehicles produced between
October 1999 and December 2000, replace the boot (if not already done) with a modified (asymmetric) boot (Figure 1) and apply special grease. Refer to
Parts Information table for correct part numbers. Otherwise, the boot and the seal ring must be modified (Figure 2). Lubricate and re-install the modified
boot and seal ring.
Note:
If the modified boot (asymmetric) is already installed in the vehicle, the boot and the seal ring can be modified. After modifying these parts per Figure 2,
lubricate the existing modified boot with grease part number A001 989 84 51 10 on both sealing surfaces of the boot (inside and outside the front
bulkhead).
Note:
Align boot with lug (Figure 1, B) pointing towards the pin (Figure 1, A).
