Tie Rod Boot: Service and Repair

AR46.40-P-0400A Check and Replace Rubber Boot

NOTE:

Numbers in parentheses ( ) indicate a component or tool in the associated illustration.

Check the bellows (19) seal of the steering gear housing to the track rod on both sides for axial movement.

Perfect bellows sealing is absolutely essential for the function of the rack-and-pinion steering

Stretch the bellows by turning the steering to full lock in both directions and check for damage (cracks, scuff marks and indentations) and replace,
if necessary.

Never check the bellows by pressing in or round the bead as this damages the plastic and causes leaks in the long-term.

REMOVAL

1. Loosen lock nut (10f) and unscrew track rod (10), then unscrew clamping nut

2. Remove inner clamps (1h) and discard
3. Remove outer clamps (1i)
4. Remove bellows and pull off over the track rod
5. Remove O-ring from steering gear housing 
6. Check steering rack and inner track rod joints for corrosion and play

NOTE:

If the steering rack is already corroded and the steering is leaking as a result, the rack-and-pinion steering must be replaced complete.

If the track rod ball joint is worn, it must be replaced.

INSTALLATION

Install in reverse order, noting the following:
a. Adjust toe-in
b. Steady track rod, while tightening lock nut to: 60 Nm
c. Use new clamp (1h), tighten using a commercially available crimping tool
