Secure steering wheel in center position using holding device (055)

NOTE:  Swing the sun visor to the side and install the holding device (055).

Check center position of steering gear and steering wheel

NOTE:  The steering gear is in the center position when the marking line on the cover is opposite the marking notch on the rotary valve (arrow).

-

Adjust steering wheel by max. one tooth if necessary.

Insert wheel spreader (030)
-

install wheel spreader (030) at the front on the inside of the wheel.

NOTE:  The elastic bearings of the spring links, torque struts and steering linkage produce a correspondingly large toe measurement which
decreases to the correct size in curb condition.

Adjust toe

NOTE:  Adjust toe by slackening the lock nut (10f) and twisting the tie rods (10).

-

Check that the bellows are not twisted after adjusting the toe.

NOTE:
-

The toe-out on turns is measured to check the steering geometry. This is the difference in the steer angle between the outside wheel and the
inside wheel when the inside wheel is steered through 20 degrees.

-

If substantial deviations are found, the cause may be one of the following, assuming that the camber and caster settings are correct:
-

Toe not adjusted with the rack-and-pinion steering in the straight-ahead position, resulting in tie rods of unequal length.

-

Steering knuckle or tie rod bent.

-

On vehicles involved in an accident, excessive deviations in the front end (frame side members, frame crossmembers, wheel housings and
firewall or on the front axle carrier) with detrimental effects on the camber and caster adjustment ranges, resulting in large differences in
the toe-out on turns between the left and right sides.

Check vehicle level at front and rear axles with electronic clinometer

Check rear axle camber

NOTE:
-

The camber on the rear axle is not adjustable.

-

If substantial deviations in the rear axle camber are found, the cause may be one of the following:
-

Excessive difference in the vehicle level between the left and right sides of the vehicle.

-

Accident damage to the frame floor. Level differences at the mounting points for the rear axle carrier between the left and right sides of the
body. Experience shows that bending caused by an accident also has an effect on the toe.
