Check and Replace Rubber Boot

Inspect

1.1 Remove bottom section of sound-proofing capsule
1.2 Remove engine compartment paneling

Checking rubber boots (11)

CAUTION:  Never check bellows (11) by pressing in or around the raised bead, as this leaves behind damage on the bellows (11) and
results in leaks in the long-term.

NOTE:
-

Because the seals on the rubber boots must be absolutely tight and leak-free to ensure that the steering rack continues to provide reliable
operation, a visual inspection should be carried out as follows:
-

Raise vehicle at front axle.

Extend the bellows (11) by turning the steering onto left wheel or right wheel lock and check for damage (cracks, chafing marks and
intrusions) in the process and replace if necessary.

Remove/Install

Remove track rod (10)

Unscrew jam nut (10f)

Detach outer clamp (11b)

Detach inner clamp (11a)

Pull off bellows (11)

Replace O-ring (23k)

Check steering rack and inner tie rod thrust joint for corrosion and play

NOTE:
-

If the rack is already corroded and the steering has a leak as a result, it is then necessary to replace the complete rack-and-pinion steering.

-

If axial joint is worn, replace the inner track rod.

Install in the reverse order.
