Receiver Dryer: Description and Operation
Purpose
-
Filtering chemical and mechanical impurities out of the refrigerant
-
Storage reservoir for refrigerant
-
Removal of water in refrigerant
Function
The liquefied refrigerant travels under pressure to the receiver/drier where it flows through a precious metal web to the filter block.
The pores of the filter block are matched precisely to the molecular size of the refrigerant so that the refrigerant can flow through the filter block.
All other substances are filtered out and deposited on this molecular screen. The purified refrigerant flows through a riser pipe to the expansion valve.
An observation glass on the receiver/drier allows the fluid level to be checked.
