Message in Instrument Cluster "Battery/Alternator Stop Vehicle" and/or "Brake

Defective Stop Vehicle"

If you receive customer reports on the above model vehicles of the Instrument Cluster (IC) displaying the red colored fault message Battery/Alternator
Stop Vehicle" and or Brake Defective Stop Vehicle" the Battery Control Module (BCM) may need to be reset. Under certain conditions, usually
associated with deep battery discharging or jump starting, a communication fault may occur between the BCM and the CAN bus. In this state, the BCM
cannot issue any voltage or current values and the above mentioned fault messages appear in the IC. Follow the below procedure to diagnose.

1.

Perform STAR Diagnosis quick test

Note: 

STAR Diagnosis quick test indicates this communication fault with the marker "next to the BCM control unit. Also the fault message," Fault in
CAN communication with control unit BCM" is also current or stored in other control units.

2.

Switch off ignition

Remove trunk floor covering from trunk

Model 211.0xx spare wheel cover or spare wheel well trim panel from trunk

Model 211.2xx remove cover above the battery

4.

Locate and disconnect connector plug from BCM and leave connector unplugged for at least 5 minutes, to perform a circuit 30 reset.

5.

Reattach connector to BCM after circuit 30 reset is complete.

6.

Perform STAR Diagnosis quick test.

7.

If the BCM is then detected during the quick test, this does not indicate a defect in the BCM, but rather the communication problem described
above.

Note: 

Following the circuit 30 reset in the BCM, the displayed fault, "Fault in CAN communication with control unit BCM" switches status from current to
stored in the other control units.

Note: 

Do not replace the BCM for the above condition, since the BCM is performing as designed. This is a protecting function inherent to the BCM that is
being activated. The BCM will again be fully operational following the circuit 30 reset.

8.

If the BCM is not detected during the quick test, then replace the BCM.

9.

Reinstall all trim pieces removed in step 3 above.

The following allowable labor operations should be used when submitting a warranty claim for this repair.
