Operational notes on new Weight Sensing System (WSS) Occupant Classification 

System (OCS)

Note: 

This document is for informational purposes only.

The above models vehicles use a new method of performing Occupant Classification (OCS), by means of a Weight Sensing System (WSS) on the
passenger front seat. Please read the attached notes, along with the Occupant Safety section of the owner's manual for more information. In addition,
a general function description of the components may be found in WIS document GF91.60-P-1001T.

Note: 

When the OCS senses that the front passenger seat is classified as being empty, the PASS AIR BAG OFF lamp will illuminate when the engine is
started and will remain illuminated, indicating that the front passenger air bag is deactivated.

Note: 

When the OCS senses that the front passenger seat occupant is classified as being up to or less than the weight of a typical 12-month-old child in a
standard child restraint, the PASS AIR BAG OFF lamp will illuminate when the engine is started and will remain illuminated, indicating that the
front passenger front air bag is deactivated.

Note: 

When the OCS senses that the front passenger seat is occupied with a weight classification of a 5% female or heavier, the PASS AIR BAG OFF lamp
will illuminate for approximately six seconds when the engine is started and then go out, indicating that the front passenger air bag is activated.

Note: 

When the OCS senses that the front passenger seat occupant is classified as an adult or someone larger than a small individual, the PASS AIR BAG
OFF lamp will illuminate for approximately six seconds when the engine is started and then go out, indicating that the front passenger air bag is
activated.

When testing the Weight Sensor System in the passenger seat, you must use special tool part number 211 589 00 32 00 (Occupant Classification Seat
Weights). Use only as described in WIS. Refer to WIS document WS91.00-P-0034B for more information on the special tool. The weight
components consist of three pieces (Figure 1):
