Load Compartment Cover Does Not Rise When Opening Tailgate

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles that the load compartment cover does not rise when opening the tailgate, this may
be due to a software error in the rear SAM or the drive unit is sticking in the lower end position. First check if the load compartment cover
motor is being energized.

1. Open tailgate.
2. Unhook load compartment cover from guide rails and roll cover up.
3. Place hand on headliner in the area of the motor mount (Figure 1) and simultaneously lock and unlock tailgate lock pawl using a

screwdriver. If the motor is being energized, a distinct movement can be felt. If there is no movement, proceed to step 7.

4. If a distinct movement is felt, the drive mechanism is stuck.
5. In this case:

a. For vehicles up to VIN B014421 or VIN X21300, replace (WIS document AR68.30-P-1100T) left and right guide rails with part

numbers A211 810 05 27 and A211 810 06 27, respectively.

b. For vehicles as of VIN B014421 or VIN X21300, it is only necessary to relieve the stress in the system. Remove and reinstall the guide

rails. Do not install new guide rails.

6. Reattach load compartment cover and check for correct function.
7. Expose rear SAM (N10/2). Refer to WIS document AR54.21-P-1258TA.
8. If vehicle is equipped with rear SAM part number A211 545 21 01 or A211 545 22 01, install new control units as of HW 03/04 and SW

10/03.

9. Reinstall removed parts. Refer to WIS document AR54.21-P-1258TA.

NOTE:
-

The affected part numbers are A211 545 21 01 and A211 545 22 01 with H/W 10/03 or 26/03 and S/W 10/03. Replacing the rear SAM with a
new part having the same HW (10/03 or 26/03) and SW (10/03 as the original part or temporarily disconnecting the power to the rear SAM is
only a short term remedy. This will cause the condition to reoccur.

Vehicles as of VIN B014421 or VIN X21300 are already equipped with the modified guide rails. Do not replace the guide rails for this
complaint.
