COMAND control unit (A40/3) activated via "ON" button

Electronic Toll Collection System (ETC) card inserted

General

The ETC simplifies the process of payment on toll roads. It settles payment procedures automatically without the driver having to stop the car.

Function sequence

To transmit and receive the data, the Electronic Toll Collection antenna (A2/94) and the Electronic Toll Collection control unit (A50/3) are installed in
the vehicle. The Electronic Toll Collection control unit communicates with the toll booth via the Electronic Toll Collection antenna. For automatic
payment a special ETC card must be inserted into the Electronic Toll Collection control unit. All information concerning the user and the fees that have
already been paid are stored on this card. The Electronic Toll Collection control unit is connected via an onboard RS-232 interface to the COMAND
controller unit. The ETC also has voice output and visual output.

Voice output occurs, when

a read error occurs on the ETC card

the ETC card is not accepted

an error occurs on the ETC card reader

a communication error occurs in the ETC gate

detailed information about recent toll payments is available

the ETC card is not inserted

Visual outputs (pop-ups) appear on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) for:

Positive feedback from toll booth
