Oil Level Warning Indicator: Description and Operation

DESIGN/FUNCTION

Oil level, oil temperature and oil quality are detected by means of an oil sensor integrated in the oil pan. The sensor which operates on the
capacitive measuring principle. features integrated electronics which analyzes the three signals.

The information is constantly advised by means of a PWM signal to the ME-SFI control module and through CAN to the instrument cluster. Each
information block consists of 3 successive square wave signals, followed by a short interval. A measured variable is assigned to each square-wave
signal (A, B, C). The on/off ratio of about 19-81% is the basis for quantisizing the signals.

The oil quality is detected for the oil change interval display based on need. The oil quality is detected from the capacity of the engine oil
(dielectric), this being increased by as much as the factor 6 if the oil quality is poor.

The measuring range for the oil level is 80 mm (standard level +/- 40 mm), measurement accuracy about +/- 3 mm.

Oil level and oil quality (capacity of the engine oil) are dependent on each other. The information is compensated first of all in the ME-SFI control
module before being transmitted to the CAN.

Faults at the oil sensor are detected by the ME-SFI control module and stored in the fault memory.

The voltage for the oil sensor (about 5 V) is supplied by the ME-SFI control module.
