Air Bag Control Module: Description and Operation

ETR Control Module with Airbag, Purpose

The emergency tensioning retractor control module with airbag (N2/2) fulfills the following functions in the event of a crash:

-

Recognition and evaluation of crash according to type and severity

-

Recognition of switching state of front left seat belt buckle/belt lock switch (S68/7) and front right seat belt buckle/belt lock switch (S68/8) at the
moment of impact

-

Triggering driver and passenger airbags

-

Triggering driver and passenger emergency tensioning retractors

-

Triggering driver and passenger side airbags

-

Sending a digital "crash signal" to the All-Activity Module AAM (N10)

-

Storing up to three crash logs

-

Evaluation of the data received from the front passenger seat occupied recognition sensor with automatic child seat recognition (B48) (passenger
seat occupied/not occupied; child present/not present; direction of child seat; etc.).

In normal operation the emergency tensioning retractor control module with airbag (N2/2) also has the following functions:

-

Self-test when circuit 15R is switched "0N" and continuous system monitoring during vehicle operation.

-

Storing up to 5 recognized malfunctions in the DTC memory

-

Control of the SRS malfunction indicator lamp (A1e15) in the instrument cluster

-

Control of the airbag OFF indicator lamp (A1e56) in the instrument cluster

-

Control of the seat belt reminder lamp (A1e9) in the instrument cluster

-

Communication with the hand-held tester (HHT) via the 16-pin diagnostic interface in the driver's footwell (reading out DCT memory, coding
control module).

-

Preventing erroneous triggering during normal operation with additionally implemented safety sensor.

ETR Control Module with Airbag, Function

The emergency tensioning retractor control module with airbag (N2/2) recognizes the following via two integrated, redundant acceleration sensors.
-

Deceleration acting on the vehicle in the longitudinal direction during a front end collision.

-

Acceleration acting on the vehicle in the longitudinal direction during a rear end collision.

-

Acceleration acting on the vehicle in the lateral direction in the event of a side collision.

In addition the control module recognizes
-

the switching states of the (driver and passenger) belt buckle switches

-

the momentary status of the passenger seat via the evaluation circuitry for the front passenger seat occupied recognition sensor with automatic
child seat recognition (B48).

The control module links all signals received and triggers precisely the airbags/side airbags and emergency tensioning retractors required for optimum
protection of the passengers in the event of a collision.

An additional safety sensor is integrated into the control module for protection against erroneous triggering during normal vehicle operation. This
sensor, which also functions as a switch, is actuated only by deceleration caused by a front end collision. It is connected into the triggering circuit for
the driver and passenger airbags and conducts the full triggering current when they are triggered.

The safety sensor is not connected into the triggering circuits for the driver and passenger emergency tensioning retractors. However, its switching
state is checked by the control module before triggering the emergency tensioning retractors. If it has been actuated by the deceleration present, the
emergency tensioning retractors are triggered.

In the event of a side collision the safety sensor has no function. Here an additional safety factor against erroneous triggering is achieved by checking
the second (redundant) acceleration sensor.

ETR Control Module with Airbag, Design

The ETR control module with airbag (N2/2) is located in an aluminum housing. The housing and electrical connector for the control module are
designed to eliminate malfunctions resulting from electrical interference in the vehicle electrical network caused by switching on electrical loads and
electro-mechanical interference from public traffic with a high degree of certainty.
