In normal operation the emergency tensioning retractor control module with airbag (N2/2) also has the following functions:

Self-test when circuit 15R is switched "ON" and continuous system monitoring during vehicle operation.

Storing up to 5 recognized malfunctions in the DTC memory

Control of the SRS malfunction indicator lamp (A1e15) in the instrument cluster

Control of the airbag OFF indicator lamp (A1e56) in the instrument cluster

Control of the seat belt reminder lamp (A1e9) in the instrument cluster

Communication with the hand-held tester (HHT) via the 16-pin diagnostic interface in the driver's footwell (reading out DCT memory, coding
control module).

Preventing erroneous triggering during normal operation with additionally implemented safety sensor.

The ETR control module with airbag (N2/2) (up to 11/99) or restraint  systems control module (N2/7) (as of 12/99) is located in an aluminum housing
and has one single plug connector. The housing and the electrical connector for the control module are designed so that malfunctions from switching on
electrical loads or from radiated electromagnetic interference from the surroundings can be excluded with a high degree of reliability.

The emergency tensioning retractor control module with airbag (N2/2) recognizes the following via two integrated, redundant acceleration sensors.

-

Deceleration acting on the vehicle in the longitudinal direction during a front end collision.

-

Acceleration acting on the vehicle in the longitudinal direction during a rear end collision.

-

Acceleration acting on the vehicle in the lateral direction in the event of a side collision.

In addition the control module recognizes

-

the switching states of the (driver and passenger) belt buckle switches

-

the momentary status of the passenger seat via the evaluation circuitry for the front passenger seat occupied recognition sensor with automatic
child seat recognition (B48).

The control module links all signals received and triggers precisely the airbags/side airbags and emergency tensioning retractors required for optimum
protection of the passengers in the event of a collision.

An additional safety sensor is integrated into the control module for protection against erroneous triggering during normal driving operation. This sensor,
which also functions as a switch, actuates only in the event of deceleration such as occurs during the head- on collision. The triggering current flows
through the safety switch when the driver or passenger airbag is triggered.

The safety sensor is not connected into the triggering circuits for the driver and passenger emergency tensioning retractors. However, its switching state
is checked by the control module before triggering the emergency tensioning retractors. If it has been actuated by the deceleration present, the emergency
tensioning retractors are triggered.

In the event of a side collision the safety sensor has no function. Here an additional safety factor against erroneous triggering is achieved by checking the
second (redundant) acceleration sensor.
