Rear Knuckle: Service and Repair

Removing/Installing Wheel Carrier

Remove/Install

CAUTION:  See Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts

Remove collared nut (12) from rear axle shaft (37)

NOTE:  Apply parking brake.

Remove rear wheels

Remove left rear rpm sensor (L6/3) or right rear rpm sensor

Remove rear axle brake caliper (111)

CAUTION:  Hang floating brake caliper/fixed brake caliper to one side using hook to prevent damage to brake hose.

NOTE:  Leave brake hose connected.

Remove brake disc (112b)

Remove parking brake shoes

Remove rear brake cable (112a) from wheel carrier

Press tie rod joint (97a) out of wheel carrier

Push follower joint (91 a) of upper wishbone out of wheel carrier

Pull rear axle shaft (37) out of rear axle shaft flange

CAUTION:  Do not damage rubber boot and rotor of rpm sensor wheel hub, otherwise electronic traction system (ETS) could fail.

NOTE:  Compress rear axle shaft as far as the stop in the direction of the rear axle center assembly. Swing wheel carrier towards the front.

If the rear axle shaft is difficult to remove:
-

Push rear axle shaft out of rear axle shaft flange.

Fasten rear axle shaft (37) with wire (arrows:

Remove supporting joint (7a) from lower wishbone.

NOTE:  Support wheel carrier and secure it to prevent it from falling down. If necessary, counterhold ball head with Torx bit.

Remove wheel carrier (7)

Install in the reverse order

15.1 Perform chassis alignment check
