Thumping Noises from Area of Front Axle on Rough Roads

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of a thumping noise from the front axle area when driving on rough roads, perform the
following.

1. Raise the vehicle's suspension via the Vehicle Level Control switch located on the center console.

2. Remove the fuse for the Airmatic control unit F4 f32/f53.

3. Drive the vehicle over a rough road surface, if the noise is no longer present then the Airmatic control unit must be replaced. Refer to WIS document
AR32.22-P-6000GZ. If the noise is still present, further diagnostics must be performed in order to isolate the origin of the noise.

4. Install fuse for the airmatic control unit F4 f32/f53.

5. Return vehicle level and damping to customer's preferred settings.
The noise is only present when the Adaptive Damping System (ADS) is positioned in "Comfort" or "Normal/Auto" mode. The noise is not present in
"Sport" mode. Due to stimulus from the road surface, the ADS valves on the front axle air suspension struts are actuated by the Airmatic control unit.
This actuation produces pressure surges in the ADS valves, which may create an audible thumping noise. This complaint only occurs with the airmatic
control unit part numbers A251 545 32 32 and A251 545 33 32.

Note:

Do not replace any suspension struts in connection with this complaint, as it is not a remedy.
