Crankshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation
GF07.04-P-6220AMG Component Description For A Crankshaft Hall Sensor
The crankshaft Hall sensor is located at the upper left on the transmission flange.
Task
The crankshaft Hall sensor detects in a non-contact manner the position and rotational speed of the crankshaft via the perforated plate (increment wheel)
on the starter ring gear.
Design
The Hall sensor and its electronics are cast in a plastic housing with a 3-pin plug connector.
The Hall sensor scans the perforated plate with its 58 links and the gap of 2 missing links (60-2).
Each 4 mm wide link generates a signal change at the crankshaft Hall sensor. In the center of the gap, the signal changes from approx. 5 V (high) to
approx. 0 V (low). No signal change takes place at the gap with the 2 missing links. The ME-SFI [ME] control unit detects the TDC position of cylinder
N3/101 for the second negative flank after the gap.
The proximity of the crankshaft Hall sensor to the perforated plate i determined by its installation position and is about 0.8 mm ( ± 0.5 mm).
