Power Steering Pump Noise

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of groaning or screeching noises from the steering pump area for approximately 1 - 2 second
after engine start in low ambient temperatures (below 30°F), this may be caused by changed characteristics of the steering fluid. The power steering fluid
in Model 164 and 251 vehicles can change (decrease) viscosity and other characteristics at a low ambient temperature (approximately below 30°F)
causing undesired power steering pump cavitations resulting in short groaning, droning or screeching noise immediately after start up. To resolve,
replace power steering fluid on the affected vehicles with Pentosin power steering fluid as described below.

Note:

Pentosin power steering fluid can be used only on models 164 and 251 with gasoline (272 and 273) engines since the power steering pump is compatible
with Pentosin fluid on these vehicles. 

Note:

Do not replace the power steering pump.

Procedure for Replacing power steering fluid with Pentosin power steering fluid

1. Unscrew cap from the power steering fluid reservoir

2. Raise the vehicle on two post lift. Wheels must hang freely.

3. Remove lower engine compartment paneling

4. Drain steering fluid from the steering system by detaching the connection of the low-pressure line coming from the steering gear to the cooler. Turn 
wheels to left and right several times (with the engine off) in order to force the steering fluid out of the system.

5. Reconnect low-pressure hose to cooler connection and install the new hose clamp.
