Steering Shaft: Service and Repair

NOTE: Numbers in parentheses ( ) indicate a component or tool in the associated illustration.
REMOVAL
Unscrew self-locking nut (96).
INSTALLATION
1. First fix nut or self-locking nut (96) on the upper steering shaft (709) with one turn of the thread
2. Position lower steering shaft (80a) onto the nut (96) and screw together by continuing to turn both parts until just before they lock in position in
the splints
3. Turn lower steering shaft (80a) until the joint fork points downwards
4. Insert adjustment gauge (075) tool No. 140 589 04 23 00, or equivalent, into the groove of the upper steering shaft and insert the joint fork of the
lower steering shaft (80a) so that it is parallel "X" to the adjustment gauge (075)

The lower steering shaft is fixed in this position relative to the upper steering shaft via the splines by continuing to screw the nut on (96)
5. To tighten, mount the steering wheel on the steering shaft and steady
