Front Steering Knuckle: Service and Repair

Removing and Installing Steering Knuckle
DANGER:

Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform
-
Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points
specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
CAUTION: See notes on self-locking nuts and bolts.

Remove front road wheel.

Detach hexagon collar bolt (61a) from the front axle shaft
NOTE: If necessary to loosen the front axle shaft, screw in the hexagon collar bolt (61a) again for a few threads and hammer the front axle shaft
out slightly using a rubber-headed mallet.

Remove brake disc

Detach brake caliper dust shield

Detach left front left front rpm sensor (L6/1) or right front rpm sensor from the steering knuckle (5) and unclip line from steering knuckle (5)

Detach brake line bracket from steering knuckle (5)

Press tie rod joint (10a) out of steering knuckle (5)

Press supporting joint (7) out of steering knuckle (5)

Press follower joint (8) out of steering knuckle (5)

Detach and pull out torsion bar link rod (23) at steering knuckle (5)
CAUTION: Installation: When tightening, counterhold the link rod joint so that the boot is not twisted or damaged.

Remove steering knuckle (5) while moving front axle shaft (60) out of the front axle shaft flange
CAUTION: Do not damage the boots on the front axle shaft and supporting joint.

Install in the reverse order

Carry out chassis alignment check.
