Camshaft: Testing and Inspection
Checking Camshaft Basic Setting

Preparation

-

Cylinder head covers removed. See: Cylinder Head Assembly/Valve Cover/Service and Repair

Overview

Checking

-

Rotate engine to 45° before ignition TDC with socket wrench, special toot 001 589 65 09 00, refer to step 1 below.

-

It must be possible to pin the camshafts with the pins (1) special tool 111 589 03 15 00, refer to step 2 below.

Adjusting (At 45° Before TDC)

-

Remove guide rails (2), install. See: Timing Components/Timing Chain Guide/Service and Repair

-

Remove chain tensioner, install. See: Timing Components/Timing Chain Tensioner/Service and Repair

-

Rotate camshafts, beginning at right exhaust camshaft with wrench, special tool 111 589 01 01 00, in direction of engine rotation, refer to Step 5
below.

Rotate camshafts, beginning at left exhaust camshaft into position with wrench, special tool 111 589 03 16 00, refer to step 6 below.

-

Fit timing chain on.

-

Pin camshafts with pins, special tool 111 569 03 15 00 (1), beginning at left exhaust camshaft, refer to steps 6 to 9 below.

NOTE:

-

The 45° before TDC marking on the vibration damper is an assembly marking.

-

The camshafts can be rotated in this position with the wrench 119 589 00 01 00 without the valves coming into contact with the piston.

Procedures

Checking

1. Position engine to 45° before ignition TDC at No. 1 cylinder by cranking engine at crankshaft in direction of rotation of engine using special tool

001 589 66 09 00.
