Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Power Steering Gear

Removal/Installation

NOTE:  Numbers in parentheses ( ) indicate a component or tool in the associated illustration.

REMOVAL

1. Move steering column out to the full extent
2. Draw off oil from the power steering pump
3. Disconnect connector, P-valve (Y10x1) on left front end and expose cable harness to steering gear
4. Detach track rod (10) at pitman arm
5. Detach drag link (11) at pitman arm
6. Unscrew return line (30f) and high pressure stretch hose (30i)

Seal line connections with plugs.

7. Remove key and allow steering lock to engage

CAUTION  The steering wheel must not be turned otherwise the contact spiral (A45) will be damaged beyond repair.

8. Detach steering shaft (80a) from the steering coupling (25)
9. Unscrew stretch bolts (23a) and remove steering gear (23)

INSTALLATION

1. Place steering gear in center position
2. Insert steering gear and screw on at the front

Replace stretch bolts (23a) and tighten as follows:
-

Tighten to: 50 Nm

-

Turn an additional: 90°, do not exceed 140 Nm when tightening

3. Push in steering shaft (80a) up to the stop in the steering coupling (25) and fit bolt (25a)

Replace bolt (25a) and tighten as follows:
-

Torx screw, steering coupling: 20 Nm

-

Lower to upper steering shaft: 110 Nm

4. Screw on return line (30f) and tighten to: 40 Nm
5. Screw on high pressure stretch hose (30i) and tighten to: 40 Nm
6. Assemble drag link (11) on pitman arm

Replace nut (10h)

7. Assemble track rod on pitman arm

-

Replace nut (11e)

8. Route cable harness from steering gear over the front axle carrier
9. Connect the connector, P-valve (Y 10x1) at

10. Fill and bleed power steering pump
