Activating the overall system

When the transmitter key (A8/1) is inserted into the EIS [EZS] control unit (N73) in position 0 (circuit 15C ON), all data bus systems are activated to
ensure a quicker switch-on process. When the transmitter key is turned into position 1 (circuit 15R ON), the COMAND display (A40/8) is switched on,
provided it was switched on before the transmitter key was last removed. The system that was active before the last switch-off (e.g. radio tuner) is
switched on and the corresponding basic menu is displayed. If the COMAND control unit (A40/3) was switched off for longer than t = 30 min, a warning
message appears at first with information on how to operate the system.

Behavior when pressing the button "ON" (A40/9s6)

The COMAND control unit and the COMAND display can also be switched on when the transmitter key is removed by pressing the button "ON" on the
front central operating unit (A40/9).

All functions are then available for t = 30 minutes The COMAND display then switches itself off automatically, unless the transmitter key is turned into
position 1 (circuit 15R ON).
When the COMAND control unit is switched on, it can be switched off regardless of the circuit status by pressing the button "ON" on the front central
operating unit.

Activating navigation
With code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (494) USA version or code (498) Japan version

The navigation system is activated automatically via the Controller Area Network (data bus/CAN bus) (CAN) when the driver door is opened. If a
navigation DVD is inserted, this process may be accompanied by faintly audible noises from the DVD drive integrated in the COMAND control unit.
The COMAND display remains switched off.

If following this, no circuit status change occurs on the EIS [EZS] control unit, the navigation system remains activated for t = 30 min. The COMAND
control unit switches off automatically after t = 30 min have elapsed. If switching-off has occurred, the system can be switched on again by pressing the
button "ON" on the front central operating unit; the run-on time of t = 30 min then starts again.

After the last action in the destination-oriented navigation (destination reached), the position map is shown again on the COMAND display. After the
run-on time of t = 1 min., the unit switches itself off completely.

Switch-off characteristics

The COMAND control unit is switched off automatically when the transmitter key is removed (circuit 15C OFF). The COMAND control unit can be
switched off regardless of the circuit status by pressing the button "ON" of the front central operating unit.

Switch-off behavior during navigation
With code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (494) USA version or code (498) Japan version

The COMAND control unit is switched off automatically when the transmitter key is removed (circuit 15C OFF). The run-on time of t = 30 min
(standby) starts.
During the run-on time, all the important localizing parameters remain stored. The run-on time of the audio systems can be set; this is done during the
installation of the COMAND control unit in the plant. The COMAND control unit is always in "Stand-by" mode when the central CAN is active.
Exceptions to switch-off behavior (run-on mode) if destination not reached:

Navigation remains active up to t = 30 min. (e.g. refueling stop). The navigation continues once the vehicle is restarted.

After t = 30 min up to a maximum of t = 2 h, the COMAND control unit remains in "Sleep mode". The route is calculated again after the vehicle is
restarted and the navigation continued.

After t = 2 hrs., a request is displayed when the vehicle is restarted asking if the route is to be calculated again.
"YES" = Route is calculated again.
"NO" = Navigation will cease.

Switch off characteristics at undervoltage

The COMAND control unit constantly monitors the battery voltage. Depending on the voltage value the system will act as follows: If the battery voltage
drops to a value below 11.5 V (battery warning range), but remains above 9.5 V, a message appears o the COMAND display, requesting that the engine
be started. If the engine is not started, then a further message follows after t = 3 min indicating that t = 10 s remain for starting the engine before the
system switches off.

In this case switching on the engine prevents the system from being automatically shut down. If the system has shut down and the battery voltage rises
again to above 11.5 V, the COMAND control unit will, however, not automatically switch back on again.

If the COMAND control unit has been shut down, the system can be switched back on again manually. There will be another warning procedure until the
cause of the undervoltage is eliminated.
