SUBJECT:
Model 221.171, Equipped with Airmatic Suspension (Code 489)
Airmatic Inoperative/"Visit Workshop" Displayed in Instrument Cluster
If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicle that Airmatic is inoperative and the message "Airmatic-Visit Workshop" is displayed in the
instrument cluster, the fuse for the Airmatic compressor may have blown and any of the corresponding fault codes may be stored in the Airmatic control
unit.
The cause may be that the compressor's harness chafed on the retaining plate or on the body panels in the area of the right front headlamp thus
causing a short circuit and blowing the fuse. Perform the following to resolve.
1.
Install a new 40A fuse for the compressor (Fuse F56). Refer to WIS document GF54.15-P-1256-03SX.
2.
Perform a Star Diagnosis short test.
3.
If the short test is successful, the compressor is fully operational and the blown fuse was caused by a short circuit. Proceed to step 5.
4.
If the short test in not successful, process the fault code(s) through STAR Diagnosis.
5.
Check the routing of the compressor cable in the vicinity of the right front headlamp from the compressor towards the A-pillar (Figure 1).
6.
If the harness is found to be chafed or routed near the retaining plate or body panels repair as instructed in WIS document AR00.19-P-0100A.
Once repaired reposition the harness away from retaining plate or body panel and secure with a tie wrap.
