Steering Wheel Shimmy / Vibration While Driving at Highway Speeds
If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of a steering wheel shimmy/vibration while driving straight ahead at highway speeds, this
may be caused by a wheel/tire assembly which is not optimized in terms of balance/uniformity.
Note:
Before performing any diagnostic procedures, confirm that the vehicle is fitted with approved Mercedes-Benz wheels and tires. Warranty
repairs/diagnostics may have the claim denied on vehicles which are fitted with aftermarket wheels/tires.
To resolve:
1.
Check the tire inflation and correct if necessary.
2.
Drive the vehicle at constant highway speeds for more than 15 miles in order to drive out any flat- spots of the tires. Only then is it possible to
objectively evaluate the vehicle condition.
3.
After the road test, immediately raise the vehicle on the lift and remove all four wheels/tires. Evaluate all wheels/tires for balance as well as axial
and radial run-out and correct as necessary.
Note:
Out of round wheels which are damaged from road hazards must be replaced as necessary. For any wheel/tire assemblies which are match-mounted,
before and after print outs from the Hunter 97MB must be retained in the customer file.
4.
If the issue is not resolved with the optimization of the wheel/tire assembly, then the bushing on the torque strut should be replaced with part
number A221 333 19 14 as described in WIS AR33.15-P-0160-02SX.
