Torque Converter: Service and Repair

REMOVING

1. Position transmission vertically.
2. Bolt retaining handles (065) to the torque converter.
3. Pull out torque converter.

CAUTION:

If the ATF is scorched or contains abrasion, it is necessary to flush out the ATF cooler pipes and ATF cooler.

If metal swarf is present in the oil pan, allow the ATF to drain out of the torque converter at the drain opening through a clean cloth

If metal swarf is trapped in the cloth after draining the ATF, it is then necessary to replace the torque converter.

In cases of doubt, flush torque converter only with ATF.

Metal swarf may result in subsequent transmission damage.

INSTALLATION 

1. Grease input flange (96) and crankshaft bearing journals with Molykote.
2. Rotate torque converter back and forward when inserting to ensure the splines mesh properly.

CAUTION:  If correct seating of the torque converter in the transmission housing is not assured, the torque converter and the ATE pump will be
damaged during transmission installation

3. After inserting the torque converter, inspect the installation height in the transmission housing

4. Use a depth caliper gage to measure the clearance "A" between transmission housing and attachment of torque converter.

Specification, dimension "A": 17-19mm 

NOTE:  The torque converter shape does not result in any change to the method used for measuring the clearance "A"
