Overhaul

Fixed Caliper

Procedure

1. Remove and install front axle brake caliper

CAUTION:  The two halves of the fixed caliper must not be separated.

2. Press off dust cap (45).
3. Insert 28 mm thick metal segment (040) into the fixed caliper, then carefully press out the pistons (47) as far as the stop using compressed-air.

NOTE:  A section of a brake disc can be used as a metal segment.

4. Remove piston (47) with piston-turning pliers (020).
5. Check piston (47) and bore in fixed caliper for damage, replace fixed caliper, if necessary

For test values for front axle fixed caliper refer to Overhaul Specifications. 

6. Remove piston seal (50) from the groove in the cylinder bore.

Coat new piston seal (50) with brake fluid 

7. Assemble in reverse sequence, noting the following:

Use pliers (026) and suitable plates (027) for installation of dust cap (45). 

Floating Caliper

1. Remove self-locking bolts.
2. Remove heat shield.
3. Force out piston with compressed air and using piston turning tongs. If piston is seized due to rust, replace complete cylinder housing.
4. Remove deposits on piston with soft brass wire brush or rough cloth only. If there is noticeable damage to chrome plating, replace piston.
5. Remove piston seal from groove in cylinder bore.
6. Check cylinder bore of floating caliper for wear. If bore is scored or rusty, replace complete floating caliper.
7. Lightly coat new piston seal with ATE brake cylinder paste and insert into groove in cylinder bore.
8. Replace dust cap, ensuring that cap is seated properly.
9. Install heat shield. Retaining lugs must engage in upper piston groove.

10. Replace dust boots, ensuring that boots are seated properly.
11. Remove and clean sliding pins and guides. Coat with special grease included in sliding pin repair kit, then assemble and ensure sliding pins move

easily.

Rear

1. Press off dust cap from housing with screwdriver.
