Idler Arm: Service and Repair

NOTE:  Numbers in parentheses ( ) indicate a component or tool in the associated illustration.

REMOVAL 

1. Remove track rod (10) on steering idler arm (26)
2. Remove drag link (11) on steering idler arm (26)
3. Remove heat shield (26h)
4. Unscrew nut (26b)

Withdraw screw (26a) and remove steering idler arm (26) and bearing tube (26i) together

5. Lift sealing lip using a screwdriver

Remove slide bushing from the bearing tube (26i)

6. Withdraw plain rubber mount (26f) using puller (061) 129 589 00 33 00, or equivalent

INSTALLATION 

1. Install in reverse order, noting the following:

-

Pull in plain rubber mount up to the stop using pulling-in tool (062) tool No. 201 589 08 43 00, or equivalent

The steering idler arm is adjusted to a defined position "a" = 22.7 mm  along the bearing tube (26i)

The adjusted position may vary by a maximum of 5 mm when the ball point position is corrected

If the specified ball point position is not achieved within this adjustment range, the bearing tube 

-

Replace self-locking nuts

-

Tighten self-locking nut of steering idler arm on bearing to: 120 Nm
