Function
Occupation of the front passenger seat is registered by the front passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor (B48). A distinction is made
between the following situations:
^
Seat NOT ASSIGNED
^
Seat occupied (not child seat)
^
Child seat detected
^
Position of child seat
Automatic child seat recognition functionality is only given when a Daimler Chrysler approved and coded child seat is use This child seat must be
equipped with 2 transponders (resonators), which are located at the left and right in its base
The restraint systems control unit (N2/7) evaluates the assignment information and in the event of a crash blocks specific restraint devices.
Seat NOT ASSIGNED
If the right front seat belt buckle restraint systems switch (S68/4) recognizes that a belt latch is not inserted into the seat belt buckle, the airbag, sidebag
and front passenger emergency tensioning retractor unit are switched off.
If the right front seat belt buckle restraint systems switch recognizes a belt latch inserted into the seat belt buckle, then only the front passenger airbag
unit is switched off.
Seat occupied (not child seat)
The front passenger airbag unit is active.
Child seat detected
If the child seat is correctly positioned, then the front passenger airbag unit is switched off and the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator
lamp (E16) is also switched on.
If the child seat is defective or incorrectly positioned (only one resonator recognized) then the airbag indicator and warning lamp in the instrument
cluster and the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp are switched on.
The signal for switching the Airbag Off indicator lamp on and off is sent from the restraint systems control unit over the Controller Area Network bus
Class B (interior) (CAN-B) to the lower control panel control unit (N72).
Behavior in case of faults
If the seat occupied recognition is defective or communication to the restraint systems control unit is interrupted (e.g. connector not plugged in), then the
airbag Off indicator lamp is also switched on. A fault is also stored in the restraint systems control unit and a corresponding message displayed in the left
multifunction display (A1p13) and the right multifunction display (A1p15) in the instrument cluster (A1).
